Hire Intelligence - Paul Chapman & Sons
An established crushing and recycling equipment hirer has extended his company’s capabilities with the rental of a Dig A Screener 700S excavator-mounted mobile screen.
The story of Paul Chapman & Sons truly is one of “little acorns into mighty oaks”. Managing director Paul Chapman started the business in 1982 at the tender age of just 21, working as an owner/operator in and around Warwickshire. But the company has grown. Having been an “early adopter” of mobile crushing and screening techniques, Chapman now employs a dozen people, operates a fleet of around 16 mobile crushers, and provides a nationwide mobile recycling service. Chapman also runs his own recycling yard, and it was the need to maintain the flow of material here while his dedicated equipment is out on hire that led him to consider the Dig A Screener 700S.
“Our recycling yard has become increasingly busy and I was concerned that we would have a backlog of material to process everytime all our equipment was out on hire,” Chapman explains. “That is why I first looked at the Dig A Screener attachment.”
Chapman admits that he was sceptical at first and actually sent a batch of power station fly ash to Dig A Crusher’s Middlewich headquarters to ensure that the 700S unit could produce the required results. “There are a lot of screening and crushing products on the market that simply don’t match up to the claims made by their manufactures. But I was immediately impressed with the performance of the 700S on our 13 tonne JCB excavator. I was able to produce 250 tonne/day of a good quality, high value and consistent material.”
The ability to hire the screening attachment on an “as and when required” basis has proved to be a huge benefit to Paul Chapman who, on some occasions, can use his own in-house equipment fleet to maintain the flow of material at his recycling facility.
“Being able to do a short term hire for a specific job was a real benefit. We were able to use our existing excavator to screen and move the product between the bays in the yard, which saved a lot of time and effort,” he continues. “Hiring gives us the ability to tackle short term projects and I would certainly consider a further hire as it proved a very cost effective method of screening the ash waste.”
Paul Chapman reports that he was so impressed by the performance of the Dig A Screener 700S and the support provided by Dig A Crusher’s new hire division that he is seriously considering an outright purchase in the future. “Being able to evaluate the screen whilst on hire, means that if there is a need, we can purchase the product at some point in the future, knowing it will definitely do the job,” he concludes.
